I have reduced spam comments and the amount of time I have to spend on them by a tremendous amount. First step was when the blog software I use introduced a feature that forces commenter to go through the comment preview page (have to click on "preview" first, then you can submit the post), which is a good thing anyway. This doesn't use JavaScript, but requires setting a cookie.

Next step was a set of user agents that are blocked in apache from doing POST requests. So people with e.g. really, really outdated old IE versions can still read my blog, but they can't post comments... because honestly I don't believe they are people in the first place.

Third step was setting up http:BL from projecthoneypot.org, which blocks accesses by more or less known scrapers and comment spam IPs. I was a bit reluctant to do this, because it puts control out of my hands, but normal people can whitelist themselves (and they manage to do that). Before http:BL I used a blacklist of IPs on my firewall, some of the most notorious IP ranges still are in there - a bit ugly, but I don't care enough to change it.

Last step was Akismet, something which I also was reluctant to do at first, because it puts control out of my hands. But in the end, the first three get most of the comment spammers, I have between 0 and 14 per month who get cought by Akismet - these are mostly "manual spammers".
